Green building must take into consideration the important contribution that sites and surrounding landscapes contribute to energy efficiency and climate change mitigation. The use of sustainable land practices on all designed landscapes—with and without buildings—provides tangible benefits to our cities and communities, including cleaner air and water, climate regulation, conservation of energy and other natural resources, and protection of biohabitat.

Greening the Landscape of the U.S. Capitol
Daniel P. Beard
Chief Administrative Officer, U.S. House of Representatives
Like buildings, outdoor spaces can conserve or consume resources. Unlike buildings, landscapes can enhance and regenerate natural resources. An understanding of the growth challenges of the House of Representatives infrastructure is not complete without consideration of the planning, design and care of the Capitol grounds, including transportation and greening issues. Beard will provide a summary of the progress being made in Greening the Capitol and will report on the landscape sustainability elements in process and planned for the House side of the Capitol grounds, including the enhancement and maintenance of landscapes, plans for green roofs, stormwater management, and related issues.
New Paradigms for Designing Sustainable Sites
David J. Yocca, ASLA, RLA, AICP, LEED AP
The American Society of Landscape Architects and its members are pioneering new, comprehensive approaches to creating sustainable landscapes and communities. Yocca will share examples of sustainable design at the site and community scales and introduce the Sustainable Sites Initiative™. A partnership of ASLA, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Austin, and the U.S. Botanic Garden, Sustainable Sites is developing performance benchmarks and a rating system to guide the design, construction, and maintenance of designed landscapes.
Special thanks to Congressman Russ Carnahan’s Office for providing the meeting room.
